RISE participants heard from several local human resources professionals about skills gaps they see in recent graduates.

Meeting Notes

  • Students should have an elevator pitch for prospective employers.
    • Who are you? What do they want to do?
  • Have an engaging presence.
  • Have some basic questions ready.
  • Be able to do small talk.
  • Eye contact and good handshake.
  • Once hired
    • It’s o.k. to follow up with a manager on items. Be sure to use tact.
    • Have quarterly check-ins.
    • Keep track of your work.
    • Handle conflict.
    • Follow through.
  • Basic math skills are needed.
  • We need to coach different generations to be supportive of the new employees coming in.
  • There is interest in remote work.
  • Students don’t have enough interview exposure.
  • Need to build resumes. Check spelling.
  • Be on time. Call if late.
  • Have phone etiquette. Often the voicemail is full or hasn’t been set up.
  • Be careful of your social media.
  • Looking for stability–be careful of job hopping.
  • Be willing to start somewhere.
  • Have computer skills and time management.
  • Prepare for the interview. Bring a notebook and pen.
