RISE participants heard from several local human resources professionals about skills gaps they see in recent graduates.
Meeting Notes
- Students should have an elevator pitch for prospective employers.
- Who are you? What do they want to do?
- Have an engaging presence.
- Have some basic questions ready.
- Be able to do small talk.
- Eye contact and good handshake.
- Once hired
- It’s o.k. to follow up with a manager on items. Be sure to use tact.
- Have quarterly check-ins.
- Keep track of your work.
- Handle conflict.
- Follow through.
- Basic math skills are needed.
- We need to coach different generations to be supportive of the new employees coming in.
- There is interest in remote work.
- Students don’t have enough interview exposure.
- Need to build resumes. Check spelling.
- Be on time. Call if late.
- Have phone etiquette. Often the voicemail is full or hasn’t been set up.
- Be careful of your social media.
- Looking for stability–be careful of job hopping.
- Be willing to start somewhere.
- Have computer skills and time management.
- Prepare for the interview. Bring a notebook and pen.
