RISE participants heard from several local human resources professionals about skills gaps they see in recent graduates.

Students should have an elevator pitch for prospective employers.
- Who are you? What do they want to do?
Have an engaging presence.
Have some basic questions ready.
Be able to do small talk.
Eye contact and good handshake.
Once hired
- It’s o.k. to follow up with a manager on items. Be sure to use tact.
- Have quarterly check-ins.
- Keep track of your work.
- Handle conflict.
- Follow through.
Basic math skills are needed.
We need to coach different generations to be supportive of the new employees coming in.
There is interest in remote work.
Students don’t have enough interview exposure.
Need to build resumes. Check spelling.
Be on time. Call if late.
Have phone etiquette. Often the voicemail is full or hasn’t been set up.
Be careful of your social media.
Looking for stability–be careful of job hopping.
Be willing to start somewhere.
Have computer skills and time management.
Prepare for the interview. Bring a notebook and pen.
